Behind the laughter a personal journey of my struggles with
DEPRESSION, dyslexia, ADHD.
I turned these challenges into a seriously funny, honest and inspiring keynote about resilience, perspective and the power of humour.
DON’T JUST GIVE YOUR AUDIENCE A TALK.
GIVE THEM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.
THE IMPACT
Did you know that unchecked mental health can lead to:
Mental Health disorders
Substance Abuse
Domestic Abuse
Relational Breakdown
Suicide
Ignoring mental health doesn’t make it disappear—it allows it to grow in the shadows. What starts as stress or sadness can quietly snowball into something far more difficult to manage. Early awareness and open conversations can make all the difference.
Mental health is more than mental illness. It is your ability to:
function at tasks
cope with life’s stressors
work and learn
contribute to your community
(World Health Organization)
It is good to build the resilience that you need to achieve all these aspects in support of your good mental health – you know, so that life can feel “lekker, my cousin!”

Silence and Burnout Are Costing Organisations More Than Just Productivity
When mental health is unaddressed in the workplace, the ripple effects damage culture, retention, and the bottom line:
The Burnout Epidemic: Chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, and high turnover are at an all-time high.
The Stigma Barrier: Employees suffer in silence, afraid that opening up about mental health will affect their careers.
The Disconnect: Leaders want to help but lack the practical tools to foster true psychological safety.
There is no shame in needing help. If you need to talk to a professional here are the places to reach out to. Barry spoke to someone, and so can you.
Depression. Dyslexia. ADHD.
Three challenges.
One very funny way of looking at life.

MY STORY

Not too long ago, I realized that I had been suffering for more than 25 years with ADHD, dyslexia, and the heavy burden of depression. Each day felt like an uphill battle, with simple tasks turning into monumental challenges. But in the midst of this chaos, my loving wife became my guiding light.
Her unwavering support was everything. She encouraged me to share my struggles openly, helping me break the silence that often felt overwhelming. With her humour, she reminded me that laughter could coexist with pain. We laughed through the tough moments, and gradually, I started to see my challenges in a new light. My ADHD became a source of creativity, my dyslexia offered me a unique perspective, and my depression was just one chapter in my story.
As I began to heal, I discovered a newfound purpose. I wanted to pay forward the love and kindness I received from her. I started sharing my journey with others, using humour to connect with those who might be facing similar battles. I organized small gatherings where we could laugh, share our experiences, and support one another.
Now, I stand as a testament to the power of love, laughter, and community. With my wife by my side, I spread hope and joy, proving that even the darkest storms can lead to beautiful rainbows. This journey has taught me the importance of vulnerability and connection, and I'm grateful for every step along the way.

"Please convey our special thanks to Barry. We had around 400 people online and the feedback has been great thus far. Just two of the comments that came through:
“What a way to start a weekend! Thanks for sharing so honestly Barry, and for showing us what others may be dealing with quietly, and how to talk more openly about our own challenges, while taking ourselves a little less seriously.”
“Thank you so much for this. My dad had a sarcastic sense of humor, and it has been a year since he has passed and I miss that humor, and so watching you today is just turning grief into fond memories and reminding me we are so blessed to have known and loved and been loved by those we have lost”

"Today, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming South African comedy legend Barry Hilton to our team for a very special talk on mental health, "Life in 3D." 🎤🧠
Barry shared personal stories about navigating challenges with humour, honesty, and resilience.
He reminded us that:
- Nobody's perfect, and that’s completely okay.
- Owning your challenges and seeing the brighter side can transform tough days.
- Humour is a powerful tool for healing, connection, and self-care.
- Perspective matters, taking a step back can help reframe the hardest moments. ✨
A massive thank you, Barry, for your authenticity, energy, and heart. You reminded us that even in the face of adversity, there's always a reason to smile. 🌈"

Corporate teams, teachers, healthcare workers, parents, creatives—anyone facing stress, burnout, or mental health challenges will find value, laughter, and practical insight in this talk.
The talk typically runs 45 minutes to an hour but can be adjusted to suit your event’s schedule and audience needs.
No, it's not a comedy show—but humour is a key part of the experience. I use it to connect, lighten the load, and help deliver serious messages in an accessible way.
Absolutely! I can bring the laughs and the message to your venue or straight to your screen—whatever works best for you. Same impact, different stage.
Yes—it tackles serious topics, but with a healthy dose of humour. It's heartfelt, honest, and seriously funny.
After years of making people laugh, I realised I could also help them heal. Sharing my own struggles with ADHD, dyslexia, and depression showed me that humour and honesty together can spark real change. Now, I use comedy not just to entertain, but to connect, inspire, and start important conversations.
